I had the opportunity to interview tiktok audio famous musician for the song Moon, Kid Francescoli! A man of many talents, sounds and voices, heres what he had to say about his new found fame.
MIA: You and your music blew up because of your song Moon being used on Tiktok. What has the response to that song been like for you?
KID FRANCESCOLI: First I felt very lucky because becoming viral is something that you can't really plan (or stop) and because it brings so much people to listen to my music
Also I've liked the way people use the song on tiktok, most of the time they tell the story of their life with it and it's nice because it's intimate, which is what I hope my music is
M: I personally fell in love with it but only month later looked up the rest of your discography. You’ve made so many amazing songs. What would you say is the song you’re most proud of making?
KF: Thank you :) I love them all for sure, but I guess that for a musician the ones you're the most proud of are the ones that match with what you had in mind, like you picture the song and you manage to make it real. I've reached it twice with the laidback sunset vibe of "eu quero" and the 80s soundtrack-like "it's only music, baby"
M: my personal favourite is My Baby. It makes me want to fall in love again and again. When you write songs, is it from experience that the lyrics are written?
KF: It's a mix of very intimate and personal things and romance and fantasy of course. That's what makes it exciting, hiding little personal details in a fiction and the other way round. When we started writing songs with julia, we were worried of going too private but then we realized that it was exactly what people liked because they recognize themselves in this
M: Did you ever see yourself becoming verified, well known and your music being as used as it is now? Was that always the goal?
KF: The goal was more global but it's part of the goal yes. I wanted to release albums that are successful enough to tour all over the world and make a living out of music. Since I was a kid I was obsessed by the whole panoply of musician: the songwriting and recording process, the live performance, but also the interviews, pictures, everything
M: I also adore Come Online. You somehow made long distance online relationships seem so beautiful. Do you believe it’s important to be vulnerable as well as artistic with music?
KF: I still don't know the answer to that question. It sounds complicated to me to be creative when you suffer, in the meantime one might think that you don't have anything interesting to say when you're happy but I think there is no rule. I think some people have this fertile ground of vulnerability and sensibility and you keep it all your life, no matter if you suffer or you're happy. The most important is to make something grow on it with a lot of work and passion
M: When it comes down to music videos, what is the ideal one you’d make for any song of yours? Have you already made it?
KF: I don't know if there is an ideal one because everybody has a personal and unique vision of each song. It has been confirmed to me by people that come and talk to me after the shows, it goes from "this song makes me wanna take my car and drive forever" to "it reminds me of my childhood" and "I play it when I make love"... for the same song ! That's the same for music videos. But you have to trust the director to put a fair vision in it. The most important is that it's his own. When I've tried to interfere with the script I quickly realized that they have to go to the end of their idea to make a good music video. The ones from "blow up" or "moon" are obviously some of them
M: if someone was finding you on Tiktok from Moon and they wanted to hear another song of yours, which one would you suggest?
KF: That's a good question because Moon is so different from the rest, it's not really an instrumental but not really a song, I don't have other song like this one. I would say "so over" or "blow up" for the vibe though
M: The contrast between female and male voices in your music makes it even better. As two people singing, is it important that the lyrics you’re singing have meaning to you both?
KF: Yes it's really important because you have to find yourself in the lyrics you're singing to make it sound sincere. For instance on the last album iOni wrote all the lyrics for "cent corps", but I mean and feel each word I sing of it, otherwise I would have let her sing the whole song
M: You’re going to be touring soon and I see you’re coming to London. But you also have a pic of camden bridge on your insta! Did you enjoy London when you came? I definitely want to come see you live when you get here.
KF: I love London. First because that was my first destination on holidays as a young adult, you know the first time you take the plane without your parents? That was London for me so I feel something special each time I come here. We already played three times here and it's getting more and more great each time. When you make a good show in London you feel very proud and relieved after because there is this vibe here like in new-york "if I can make it here I can make it anywhere"
M: With the recent release of your new album, Lovers, what is one thing you want people to take away from your new music?
KF: I can't really decide or wish what people want to take away from my music, it's more of their choice and their personal interpretation. Somebody said to me about Lovers: "when I play it I instantly feel the sun on my skin", if people could feel that, that's fine with me
