Tom Odell Live Review - As Magnificent As his Songs

I was able to see Tom Odell at an intimate show, front row, on the 22nd of October at the Union Chapel - one of my personal favourite music venues. What comes alongside intimate shows is not for everyone; shorter setlist, often the feeling in a venue like the Union Chapel to not sing along, etc. Tom Odell, however, made something like an intimate show very easy, smooth, and meaningful.

It's refreshing when an artist speaks to the crowd in a way that one would have a conversation. It's also heart warming when they stop between every song to thank everyone for being there and apologise for smiling a lot because he's just very grateful. Genuine appreciation for those that essentially pay your bills is, on paper, definitely the bare minimum, and yet, still so warming to see.

Tom Odell has, and I think we are all aware, a beautiful voice. Not a single wrong note, not a single missed word or different attempt. Every song sounded just like they would if you were to open up Spotify and play them right now. Joining him on stage was a choir, of which he named every individual to thank them personally, and I truly believe that, especially in a venue like the Union Chapel, that it was almost a necessity. They perfectly complimented all his songs and were absolutely stunningly talented.

We got a sneak peek into some of the unreleased songs from his new album, and they were absolutely beautiful. As an artist that is almost predominantly acoustic, playing the main instrument himself, I believe it's harder to get a crazy stage presence that is equated to being unforgettable. Simultaneously, that's not what you sign up to when you book tickets to see Tom Odell live, and you're aware of that.

I think that on Saturday I witnessed and experienced a very beautiful night of music. Every song, although pre-heard, felt even more meaningful in the moment, and as he said it himself, it was a funny way to spend a 'Saturday night listening to depressing music'. It was most certainly emotional, and evoking emotion live let alone through music in itself is an absolute talent to me.

I highly recommend seeing Tom Odell live if you get the opportunity. If you're someone who seeks thrill and crazy lights and bloody flame throwers, Tom Odell's shows are not for you. But if you're looking for a highly emotional sweet night full of good music and gratitude, this is the show for you.
