'The pandemic completely destroyed my ability to create' - Interview w Henri Bolger

ME: you've followed me for a long time and if I remember correctly, music has always been in your user and part of your page. When did you realise you wanted to go into music?

HENRI BOLGER: i would say i realised i wanted to go into music after hearing the album CTRL - SZA, I was just utterly obsessed with this album and showed me what could be created in music now, and just inspired me to learn guitar and do my own thing

ME: You’ve posted this January that there’s something exciting coming soon - can we expect many announcements this year?

HB: definitely - i have so much music coming out this year hahaha, and other stuff aswell i’m really excited to talk about when i can!!

ME: How do you feel currently, about making music?

HB: It’s all i want to do for the rest of my life, i’m just genuinely in love with my craft and getting better and just enjoying creating things is so much fun and i’m in a really good place with it at the moment

M: Did the pandemic help you make music? Or did it do the opposite?

HB: Honestly no, the pandemic completely destroyed my ability to create things in general, mostly because I write songs about experiences or things that have happened to me and nothing was happening so i didn’t really have much inspiration, my parents both have respiratory problems so it was just a bit of an anxious mess for me tbh

M: What is your biggest goal this year with your music?

HB: my biggest goal this year in music is to book some local shows and improve my live performance skills as i want to do more gigs and play more over the next year, i have a few opportunities lined up locally that i will be taking up soon.

M: Do you feel like this year is your year for music?

HB: absolutely, the single i’m about to release is the best thing i’ve created so far and i’ve written better thing since so i’m just so excited to see where this year takes me in terms of music and what i can create

M: When it comes to your music, how would you describe it for someone who has never listened before?

HB: i would describe my current music that is out at the moment as a bit of a disorganised study into things i enjoy listening to, however the current music i’m creating is very lyrically driven indie pop/rock inspired by bon iver/pheobe bridgers and also with some post-punk influences like the velvet underground and wet leg

M: You’ve had many streams before, thousands over the years, how do these numbers make you feel?

HB: to be honest i would say my relationship to numbers is a weird one - especially because of spotify’s abysmal royalties and how although i’ve had a lot of numbers i’ve found it difficult to cultivate a true audience, which i’ve had more success on bandcamp financially and creating a real audience who will come to my shows and things like that rather than just click on my music and forget about it by tomorrow

M: What can we look forward to from you this year?

HB: This year i will be putting out as much music as physically possible, I also hope to start a youtube channel where i can do vlogs with my band and alot of other cool stuff. i also plan to play live alot more now we have reduced restrictions in the uk now.

M: I like to end on a fun one - if you chose any stage name what would it be?

HB: that’s an interesting one hahah, i’ve had a few funny ones for my band including the donna summers because i’m obsessed with donna summers but for myself if have to say it would be something related to fiction like an author, for example like sylvia plath or emile brontë. another more serious one i’ve thought of for myself is boyn’t that is supposed to be a statement about how i feel about my gender identity, as a nb person i’ve always felt a lack of belonging around guys and that’s just a really personal one for me
