After my first listen to the 1975s new music, I was unsure if I liked it or not. The sound was new, the messages being conveyed were important and positive, but something felt off. I got the chance to see them live at the O2, and purely looked forward to listening to their old songs such as Loving Someone and Fallingforyou. However, their new catchy singles, finally caught my ear.

Although the 1975’s music in general, or any music at all, will be of someone’s specific taste, I was a massive fan of their earlier work and felt disappointed with their new songs. However, hearing it live gave a new perspective, helped by the incredible visuals and the amazing stage prescence from Matty Healy, the front man.
Visuals for the song “Love It If We Made It”, showed modern day issues, including footage from marches and political events, proving to me that their new work was more than just a song, or an album, but a message they truly believed in. Credit to all members, and not just Healy, their live performance sounds almost identical to the digitally released versions, which a lot of artists struggle to do. All members, especially George Daniel on the drums, looked particularly passionate about their part in what seemed to be an extremely big and meaningful event to them, which is important to fans and in general as such music is able to touch people personally, and if the feeling isn’t mutual, it can lose all meaning.
During the performance of new song ‘I always wanna die (sometimes)’, Healy began to cry and later an image was posted on social media showing they had sold over 130,000 tickets. As a fan who has been around for a while now, and had never seen them live, I was impressed and truthfully touched emotionally by their utmost love for their music, their fans and their performance. Healy also came into the audience and told myself, and those around me, one on one, that he loved us. This connection and warm-heartedness with fans shows the realness in this band, which we lack in the modern day.
Whether you‘re a fan of the 1975’s new work or not, you will be afterwards, and they are certainly no disappointment live, a balance with old and new songs. I can say, as a concert goer, this was the best concert I have ever gone to as of yet.
