Royce Rockwell lets me into the mindset of an uprising independent musician.
M: So, firstly, I know your real name is Luka - where did the stage name come from? What was it inspired by?
RR: I just wanted a name to match the aesthetic of my music, Royce came from my fave car rols Royce and my friend came up with Rockwell.
M: nice, nice - well, Heartless was your biggest hit on YouTube that you’ve released. Did you expect that?
RR: I actually didn’t think it would do that well considering it’s entirely produced on my phone But I have a much better sounding version coming out on streaming platforms, it’s way more alternative.
M: Why are you releasing a new version of it?
RR: I guess a change in perspective of my music and an improvement in production ability
M: What’s your personal favourite song of yours?
RR: It would either be heartless or gold chain, which I have yet to release.
M: Whats the meaning behind gold chain? Unlike the rest of your songs - the title leaves the meaning quite open to one’s mind.
RR: It’s about the person obsessing over riches and popularity and not really caring about others.
M: As a small artist, you aren’t as exposed to a mass amount of people. Is that something you’re working towards? Or are you more nervous/scared of it?
RR: Yeah it’s something that I’m working hard for, I just want people to appreciate my music as much as I do. Even tho I want a lot of ppl to find out about my music I still get stage fright, so getting used to that might be a little hard.
