Patti Smith in Concert

On October 4th I had the amazing opportunity to see the one and only legend, Patti Smith. Patti is one of my biggest idols in this life - not just within what she creates but her as a person. Patti gets on stage and begins to recite a poem about her early years where she felt stuck and yet determined to make it big. 'I will get out of here, I will go to New York City, I will get out of here!' The pure strength in the womans voice would be enough to blow you away front row - literally.

Although Patti is an idol of mine, her music was not the reasoning, but her writing, her most famous book called Just Kids. I was excited to hear her recite poetry and see the way she found emotion in every word she sang or said. I was far from disappointed. Patti on stage has a humour, an essence, an energy about her that is unlike most, something that by far separates her from the rest of us. Dancing, joking about her age, talking with eloquence over sensitive subjects - I am sure when I say I will not experience another like seeing Patti.

Smith also has her children on stage with her, Jesse and Jackson Smith, her son playing guitar and her daughter playing the piano. During her set she also put in some covers such as Stevie Wonder, dedicating many of her own songs to those she deems herself as legends. I have gone to many concerts, ones larger and smaller than this, and I can honestly say there is no crowd like this one. It seemed people were happy enough in her presence let alone to listen to the magic she has created.

Ultimately, this night is honestly beyond describable. Patti is unlike any other artist out there, and one I would highly deem a creative genius. Seeing her live is something I am grateful for as she herself is one of the greats and not many people will get the opportunity, so if you do, please go and see her.
