'[my biggest goal is] to keep creating music that brings me joy' - Interview w/ Darcey Salt.

ME: We’ve known each other for a few years now and since I’ve known you, you’ve always known that music was your one true path. Do you feel that could ever change?

DARCEY SALT: I don't think my love for music will ever change. There's something about music in general that I’m addicted to, so the thought of not wanting to pursue it as a career has never crossed my mind. I don’t feel that will ever change.

M: Was music your first ever passion growing up?

DS: Although music has also been in my life it wasn’t my first passion. I grew up loving sports, tennis in particular, so when I was younger I always imagined myself being a professional tennis player when I was older. However, I have always loved music/musical theatre and was part of a theatre company from a young age so music and performing has always been a part of my life and a passion of mine.

M: Do you feel that you hold some privilege in the music industry?

DS: I do feel I hold some privilege in the music industry being a white cis female as the music industries embedded with institutionalised racism. There’s becoming more gender equality in the industry as there has been an increase in female representation but there’s still a lot of racial inequality and barriers people of colour will face that I won't.

M: How has performing been for you, live, since the pandemic?

DS: I’ve loved being back on stage. I’ve been making the most of restrictions lifting and have been performing on new stages I hadn’t before the pandemic which feels great. At first I was nervous to get back on stage as I hadn’t performed to an audience in a while but everything’s been going smoothly. I’ve now got a great band who perform with me and give me support on stage to calm my nerves.

M: Did the pandemic help or not help your process of making music?

DS: The pandemic allowed me to focus on writing and developing my sound. It forced me to experiment with other ways of recording music and collaborating with others. I found it frustrating at times not being able to gig and test out new music to an audience, but the pandemic allowed me to sit back and not feel so pressured. It gave me space to think about where I wanted to go with music and the sort of sound I wanted to develop. Removing all distractions overall the pandemic allowed me to focus.

M: What would your advice be to younger Darcey?

DS: Keep following your heart and don’t stress about where you’ll be in the future. Don’t be too precious over your songs, allow yourself to develop/change them.

M: What would your advice be to younger people who also want to be musicians?

DS: Just go for it! Allow yourself time to develop and grow. There's no rush. Don’t feel pressured to study music or go to uni, do what feels best and suits you. Keep creating/playing music and meet others who are also pursuing music/love music. It's helpful to know people and be able to work with people who have similar passions.

M: What can we expect next when it comes to your music?

DS: I’ve been experimenting when it comes to my recorded tracks. I’m hoping to release this year fingers crossed in which you can expect a funky live, singer/songwriter, jazz/soul vibe.

M: What is your biggest goal for this year when it comes to your music?

DS: To keep creating music that brings me joy and keeps me happy. To refine my sound and bring my whole image together. I also hope to start getting back into the production side of music and start producing my own tracks again. I would love to play more gigs in new places and start growing a little following. I’m just excited for the future and see where music takes me over this year.

M: I like to end on a fun one - name an artist you know personally that you think will do big things in the future!

DS: Ooo a very interesting question! I would probably have to say 8szn. I absolutely love his music and sound. Definitely one that's killing it now and will carry on killing it in the future, definitely big things coming for him.
