ME: You started releasing music on Spotify in 2020. Did the pandemic have a play in the decision to release them?
THE RED ROOM: I think that was such a weird time for everyone but it gave me so much time to write. To the point where when we were finally all got to get together, we just had so much to create and we wanted to get it all out there as quick as we could.
M: Your name is super interesting to me. Where did you come up with it?
TRR: Everyone always asks this and I wish I had an intellectual answer but we actually just stringed the words together. I know there's a book called red room and a red room in twin peaks so I wish I could say it was those things!
M: You have a new release out this September! How are you feeling about it?
TRR: Yes we have a song called Coffee coming out, it's exciting and we're really happy about it. I don't think we get nervous anymore but there are underlying tones of something similar.
M: Your cover images have gone from photos to illustration to super artistic post edit photos. How does that growth concur?
TRR: I've always loved photography. When we wrote songs I could just see a particular image summing that song up, usually people I knew or met or friends. Then, Time came out and we didn't think a photo could sum it up so we got an artist we love to illustrate it.
M: There’s five of you - how is the dynamic between you when you go to make music together?
TRR: It's very collaborative. I'll do a lot of writing and we'll figure out what works and what doesn't. It takes a lot of trial and error, we wrote something recently and it didn't work and we tried it another way and that also didn't work, but then we found a way that did work. It's a process.
M: You also played at reading and leeds this year! What was that experience like?
TRR: It was really cool! You know, we pay to get to these places and we finally are doing lots of gigging which we haven't done much of this year prior to August, so it felt really good and like I said, not quite nervous at all anymore!
M: You’ve raised money for charities before and I was curious to know how those important subjects for you as individuals comes into your music if at all?
TRR: I think with certain subjects you've got to be careful how and if you approach them. When you've got an audience and a platform you don't know how people are going to take or twist political stances in music. You don't want to have people take it the wrong way, so it's about the execution of it.
M: You have over 50k streams on one song alone. When you started out did you think you’d reach those numbers?
TRR: Not at all, and even as it progressed we didn't really feel it happen, it was such a natural progression that we didn't see coming, you know, we're no longer a tiny local band but we're also not a big signed band with development deals.
M: What’s advice you’d have for 2019 the redroom?
TRR: Don't stop writing otherwise it'll be really hard to get back to it!
M: I like to end on a fun one; when I first saw your name I thought of red rum from the shining. If you could be named anything in links to a movie or show what would it be?
TRR: To be honest, we think the Redroom from twin peaks is the best one we could think of!
