Don't ask how, don't ask why, but did I somehow wind my way on to MGK's October 1st London concert? Yes I did. Did I know a single song? I barely knew a line in any of the songs. Did I still go? Absolutely. Taking my friend who works at gig venues, we were ready to sit in the crowd, far away, and take the piss a little, whilst placing bets that Yungblud would turn up. The night, however, took many twists and turns, none of which I was expecting.
First of all, I actually enjoyed it. Although I'm not personally a fan of MGK, I walked out of Wembley Arena with one solid fact about him; that man can put on a show. From insane stage props (giant blow up aliens, women, and fake but life sized helicopters) to fun interval videos that tell a story, to bringing out several guests, to actually sounding like he does on a recorded song... there's no doubt that he can capture an audience.
Talking of which; he knows his crowd. I was well aware walking into there that I was not the target audience; all these men with pink hair and mgk hoodies on were. Stoners, people into rap, and moshers were among the thousands there. He had conversations with the crowd in a way that I haven't seen an artist do for a while, cracking jokes specifically about our McDonalds breakfasts being incredible, which he's right about, and pubs and alcohol, etc. Like I said, he knows his target audience.
We knew there would be at least one guest, me and my friend guessed one would be Yungblud, but firstly, he bought out Skepta. Again, not at all am I the target audience, but watching the most random two people have fun on stage was entertaining to say the least. And then it happened, he bought mister Yungblud out and I pissed myself laughing the whole time that I'd bet on it. Have some faith in me - I'm not a yungblud fan either. But was it still fun to see? Absolutely.
Now, I can't say much for his fashion sense at all, but I can say the show is a never ending rollercoaster, in a good way. Fire, confetti, sparklers going into the crowd... yeah, it was something. Not to mention, ending the show on his song Twin Flame whilst singing directly to Megan Fox herself (yep, she was there. and his daughter was literally in the crowd).
I always say that even if something isn't my thing, I'll try everything once. I live and thrive for experiences of all kinds. So, ultimately, I actually loved my night. Twin Flame was also a song that ended up meaning more to me than I thought any song he sang would end up meaning. Thank you to Elisa for getting me onto the guest list and giving us such amazing seats, it was amazing. If you've planned to see MGK on his tour, or at all, I can say at the very least that you'll be watching an absolute spectacle.
