M: Your new single comes out this Friday (feb 21st). How excited are you for its release?
H: I am so excited that I am literally rising from the dead lol.
It’s called ‘Car Crash’. What is the inspiration behind both the title and the song itself?
A couple of months ago, I was going through a really bad breakup and I was very distracted while driving. I crashed my car into the car in front of me, and my car was completely totaled. And then something amazing happened. I stopped giving a fuck about my ex. I started focusing on myself and realizing how important it is to take care of yourself and love yourself first. The song is a celebration of life, an anthem for those who survive and live their life to the fullest because of it :)
You’re going on tour with Holy Child soon. Is touring a fun experience for you whether it’s by yourself or with other people?
This is my first tour! I’ve heard that touring is the best. I can’t wait! I’m traveling with some bandmates and photographer friends.
What’s been your best and favourite experience whilst performing/travelling and touring?
I love doing crazy shit onstage like jumping off of things and pouring water all over myself. However my favorite experiences while performing always come from connecting with people after the show. I think my favorite thing someone said to me is that they had had a bad day and that they felt “free” while watching my concert. THAT’s my true aim with performing.
Your aesthetic is quite a large aspect of your image. I personally love the whole 80s roller rink pics and inspo in some of your recent posts. What draws you to the aesthetics you share?
Thank you so much! I think a lot of people are afraid of color. NOT ME. I love color. Our world is so colorful and I love reflecting that. I also love things to be matching. It’s makes me feel good lol!
I don’t really have a specific style icon, I just started really expressing myself really hard through my look about 2 years ago. And it feels. so. good.
Do you think that younger you would be happy to see where you are right now with your music?
Definitely! I only just began this journey into the music world 2 years ago, and I have a strong, clear message with my music, I know why I am making music, and I am embarking on my first tour with a band I love, and sitting on a brand new EP set for release this year. I think younger me would be so proud!
Aside from the single release, what can we look forward to this year from you?
New EP, more touring, and more surprises along the way. Lots of cool stuff in the works!
Where did the stage name ‘Holander’ come from?
Actually, my last name is Hollander, and so to make it my own, I just decided to take out one “L.” I liked how it was still very much tied to my identity & where I came from, whilst also making it my own!
You’re based in California, I believe. Where’s one place you’d love to go and see but also perform in?
Tokyo for both. Just, Tokyo.
This seems ridiculous but I saw the image of you with glitter on your tongue and I would love to know how the hell you got that off and out of your mouth, it looked like a nightmare!
Haha great question! I definitely had help :) My manager at the time was all up in my mouth patting the glitter on, and we would take a few photos once it was on and then I would start drooling from keeping my mouth open like that. So then I had to spit it out and go again! Definitely worth it for the photo though!
