We all remember when Still Feel by Half Alive came out with that spectacular orange thumbnail that kept being suggested over and over on YouTube to us. At least, I do. And I hadn't realised it's been four years of it being suggested to me. Alas, in that time, it has accumulated over seventy million views. Every time I listened to it, I thought I'd like it. But I didn't like it the way I thought I would, so I kept leaving the band alone. Until Conditions of a Punk came out.
Half Alive's second album Conditions of a Punk came out and it's safe to say they have me hooked. So much so that as I typed this up I found they are on a UK tour and I've just impulsively spent money to see them in March. I knew of them from Still Feel but what convinced me to listen to them was the curse of our generation; tiktok.
To say the least, they were overwhelmingly smart with their marketing with their new song coming up with a dance to it and posting the most catchy few seconds to their tiktok. And it was successful. But, being obsessed suddenly with Did I Make You Up? I decided to give the whole album a listen - and I'm so glad I did.
Somehow, each song is as catchy as the next yet in different ways and having a range to the individual song still. How they managed to be the third album this year I've come across with absolutely no skips is beyond me, I don't think I've had this many unskippable albums in my life but the crown surely goes to Half Alive.
Their creativity, however, does not only extend to their music making nor their marketing but also their album covers and music videos of which are all equally as beautiful, artistic and expressive. I haven't come across a band with this much creativity in a long time, and perfectly good music alongside them.
I'm excited to now suddenly be seeing them next March and to be giving them a review. Stay tuned, for I'm sure they won't be disappointing.
