Finneas, often referred to as Billie Eilish's brother, has become one of my favourite artists over the past year, and deserves, in many peoples opinion, to have a larger spotlight of his own. Of course, he is known for his producing, even with artists such as Camila Cabello, and his helping of his sister with writing too. Although his talents shine through with these other artists, undeniably, his shine makes its way through most in his own work.
I fell in love with Finneas' music when What They'll Say About Us first was released last year in 2020. It was unlike what I'd heard before and I managed to create a large attachment to it, making it a song between me and my partner, representing out love despite the meaning of the song being entirely different to what we'd made it. I very quickly afterwards fell in love with his other songs, Angel, I'm In Love Without You, and when Biden won, I blasted Where The Poison Is like I was celebrating for my own country.
What was so clear to me upon first hearing Finneas' music, was not only his production skills, but his lyrical skills. It's not too often these days that I feel I find a musician who puts what feels like poetry into music anymore. But Finneas does. And another thing I loved, was that he could make a song about anything. I'm entirely convinced he could release a song about lemons and oranges and somehow make it sound like a devastating love story. His creativity stretches beyond horizons not many others can reach.
A few weeks ago, Finneas released some US tour dates along side a single, A Concert Six Months From Now, and the release date for his upcoming album, 'Optimist'. Above, his album cover. Not only are people excited for this album as anyone would be, but there is excitement multiplied due to this being his debut album. For an artist previously known for his singles, this news was long awaited.
A Concert Six Months From Now blends the idea of optimism during the pandemic whilst simultaneously portraying this idea of a broken relationship where both people involved mutually still love each other and want to make things work. Despite being in a stable long-term relationship with YouTuber Claudia Sulewski, Finneas manages to build stories and images of many types of relationships throughout his music. Another example being a relationship where two people love each other but others are involved and the love is slowly dissolving, yet a thread simply holding them together in I'm In Love Without You.
Finneas' aesthetic maintains a dark, lonesome, yet warm sensation that one would find in an empty hall or concert venue - just like the one in his recent music video. To say that this album is overdue is an understatement - as it is to say I am simply thrilled. Look out for 'Optimist' coming out this year, October 15th.
