Earlier this year, Lorde released her album Solar Power. Despite it not doing as well as Melodrama and living up to most of its hype prior, it still did very well. People were especially here for her new aesthetic which leached off of astrology, the planets, the zodiac signs, etc.
Last year there was a crazy boom in spirituality becoming popularised and trendy. This was bullshit. As a long term professional tarot reader, a spiritualist at that, I almost felt offended, and at the very least, mad. Tiktok infiltrated the population with ideas that were false and it became something to follow instead of being passionate about it. Now, everyone knows their sun, moon and rising, but not what they actually mean.
However, this lead to an increasing popularity of it with celebrities. Many of my very popular and professional tarot reader mutuals read for celebrities. And there is no issue in that at all - if I were famous, I'd have my own reader and astrologer too because I'm aware of their importance and roles in society and my own personal life and spirituality. But this also further lead to things like Solar Power. Aesthetic driven music.
That's not to criticise it, because I truly liked several songs on Solar Power, and I don't know Lorde personally to say she's using it as an aesthetic - if anything, she seems genuinely into it. But what it proved, was that people weren't actually into astrology or spirituality at all. Because when it came out, the link to it was barely spoken about, even though fully aware that it was her intention.
Other artists such as Birdy have released singles and EP's based on astrology and the signs and planets. Again, not extremely successful, but still very beautiful. If anything, I appreciate that these very amazing things are coming to light in the right way - finally. But the lack of attention to these things is showing to most, it is merely a trend.
My hope for the upcoming year is that if more artists use this for their work, that it is widely appreciated and recognised for what it is, instead of the aesthetic of it, and that if there is a boom in popularity within the population for things like astrology, that it is for the right reasons and the right reasons only.
